The Workforce Capability Diagnostic

Can your workforce execute your strategy?

Strategy can change in a quarter. Workforce capability usually cannot. This free 10-minute diagnostic helps leaders identify workforce constraints before they become execution constraints.

Free. Ungated. Approximately 10 minutes.

What this diagnostic helps you see

Organizations rarely discover workforce constraints when there is still plenty of time to solve them. The warning signs usually appear earlier, in the assumptions connecting strategy, staffing, development and execution.

  • Strategic alignment: Whether workforce planning begins with what the business intends to accomplish.
  • Capability pipeline: Whether critical skills are being developed early enough.
  • Front-line execution: Whether supervisors and employees can translate strategy into operating performance.
  • Workforce resilience: Whether critical work is overly dependent on limited people, overtime or external support.
  • Labor-management execution: Whether the employment relationship helps resolve operating issues constructively.

The Capability Gap Test

Workforce risk begins when strategic requirements start moving faster than the organization’s ability to build capability. The Capability Gap Test connects four variables leaders should examine before execution begins.

The Capability Gap Test: Strategic Demand, Current Capability, Build Time and Execution Exposure.

How to use the diagnostic

Set aside approximately 10 minutes. Score the organization based on what it can demonstrate today, not what leaders intend or assume to be true.

  1. Score the 20 statements. Evaluate the organization across five dimensions of workforce capability.
  2. Find the weakest category. Determine whether the underlying constraint involves capacity, capability, leadership or system design.
  3. Apply the Capability Gap Test. Test one major strategic initiative against current capability, development time and the consequences of delay.
  4. Identify the three greatest exposures. Use them to focus the next leadership discussion or planning decision.

The score is not the endpoint. Its value is the conversation it forces the organization to have.
